'Salangai Oli' is the story of classical dancer Balu who hails from a poor family, but somehow manages to learn different forms of classical dances. His dream is to master all the dance forms and then create a new classical dance form of his own. Unfortunately, all his efforts fail due to unexpected and unfortunate happenings. These situations, coupled with his inability to achieve success, turn him into a drunkard. Just when he reaches a critical point in his life, his estranged beloved comes back into his life and tries to bring him back to his normal self.

Dharmalingam a rich businessman is a worried man due to a strange prediction, about his life. It is predicted that his four daughters should be married together on the same day or else his death is imminent. His second daughter Lalitha (Jayalalitha), falls in love with Madan (Sivaji Ganesan), an assistant manager in a Company. Dharmalingam entrusts him with the task of finding bridegrooms for the other three daughters. Madan happily agrees, little knowing that this is just the beginning to his never ending nightmares! The three daughters have various demands, and Madan is forced to dance to their tunes. He plays many a roles, scripts many a twist and turns, but everything backfires. Will all these compounded confusion ever clear or is Madan fated to live the life of a bachelor?

Adhering to its title 'Cinema Paithiyam', the movie depicts and traces the life and transformation of Jaya (Jayachitra) from the reel world to the real world. So obsessed is she with movies and the movie world, that she worships the popular film hero Jai Shankar, believing all that he portrays on screen, to be his real self. He becomes the ideal man of her dreams, and she even tattoos his name in her arm. Hell breaks loose when she refuses to marry the boy Natarajan (Kamalhaasan) arranged by her brother and her sister-in-law. At his juncture, steps in her Uncle, who takes it upon himself to show her the true world, by taking her on a trip around the real life of a star.

Ramakrishnan of Tenali , a poet by profession leads a pathetic life, until he gets the blessings of Goddess Kali. The goddess offers him a bowl of knowledge and a bowl of wealth, and tells Raman to take any one bowl. But Raman drinks both the bowls at one go, and says that one is of no use without the other. The Goddess blesses him that he will be known as Vikatakavi meaning, clown jester. Tenali becomes the court poet of Krishnadevarayar of Vijayanagaram. The movie showcases several incidents from the life of Tenali Raman, thereby showing his extreme wit and his extraordinary contribution in saving Vijayanagaram, from its enemies, the Sultans.

Pandian (Sivaji Ganesan) decides to end his life, as he has been driven out of his house by his sister-in-law. Kabali (M.R.Radha), the head of a robber gang, saves him and brings him to his house. Kabali and his accomplice Marudu (Sivaji again) plots to kill Pandiyan, look alike of Marudu and collect an Insurance amount of one lakh, which is in the name of Marudu. The innocent Pandiyan is not aware that he is being used as the sacrificial goat. In the meantime Pandiyan falls in love with Seeta (Devika), the daughter of Amritalingam Pillai (M.R. Radha again) a rich businessman. When Pandiyan finds out that his life is in danger, he escapes. He saves the daughter of an estate owner, and is adopted by him as his own son. On learning this, Kabali hatches another plan. He decides to kill Pandian, and send Marudu in his place as Pandian, and thus enjoy the wealth. But Pandian's brother, scientist Shankar (Sivaji for the third time), dons Pandian's role at the behest of his wife. How does all this confusion resolve? Is Pandian really dead?

Michael Madana Kama Rajan' is the story of identical quadruplets (all the four roles played by Kamal Haasan) separated at birth by their jealous uncle. One of them, Madan, ends up with the real father, a millionaire, but the father is unaware that it is his own son. The other three end up in various places. One becomes a fireman, another a cook and the fourth becomes a thug, as he is brought up by a thug. Madan, on learning that his father was killed, starts investigating when he comes across the others. Incidentally the thug is hired to bump off Madan who in the meantime has switched places with the fireman. Tremendous confusion follows, but all's well that ends well.

True to it's title - which means three knots - the story revolves around three characters and the unexpected happenings in their lives. Balaji (Kamal Haasan) and Prasad (Rajnikanth) both fall in love with a young, college girl Selvi (Sridevi) who lives with her sister Subhadra. Balaji and his roommate Prasad are bachelors who live alone in the same neighborhood Selvi falls in love with Balaji and does not reciprocate Prasad's feelings. Prasad is unable to face the rejection by Selvi. So, he gets Balaji out of his way. Selvi is furious but helpless. Her misfortune continues as she loses her sister also. She is left with no option but give her consent to marry Prasad. Will she now accept Prasad's love or does she seek revenge for her lover's death? Selvi chooses a novel and interesting path which forms the rest of the story.

However, when a new collector takes over Gopinath's office, his world is shattered because she is none other than Janaki (Sowcar Janaki), his first wife.
